What does Your Voice Reveal about You?

Well aside from the obvious, such as your gender, your voice can reveal your age, and it turns out your height.  Age related changes in voice have been investigated over the years.   For example, with aging, female voices typically lower in pitch, and male voices tend to raise in pitch.   Additionally, the aging voice can become weak, more hoarse, and limited in range.  A study presented in December at the Acoustical Society of America revealed that listeners can determine the relative height of speakers based solely upon review of voice recordings  http://goo.gl/rReE4u

This finding of identifying height based solely upon voice is attributed to “subglottal resonance”, or how the sound vibrates through the chambers of the lungs in the chest below the vocal folds.  The frequency or pitch becomes lower as the individual’s height increases.   Listeners were able to identify the taller speaker more than 62% of the time.   Additional factors that impact the quality of voice include the other resonating chambers such as the nose and sinuses, throat or pharynx, and the mouth.   Persons who may not be particularly tall, but have a broader jaw may have more resonance capacity, and therefore opportunity for better quality or more vocal range.  Persons with large tonsils may have a more muffled resonance, as the soft tissue takes up space in the mouth interfering with the flow of the voice.

A lot goes into making the quality of your voice.  What does your voice reveal about you?  Are you satisfied with yours?  Can you take advantage of those resonating chambers to make your voice more appealing?  Contact Voicetrainer, LLC for more information at 202-580-6646 or info@voicetrainer.com if you would like to fine tune your voice to present your most effective voice.
